LED Residential Lighting for Grow Lights

residential lightingGardening is a relaxing activity that you can do not only in outdoor area, but also indoor inside your house with proper residential lighting. Although plants should be conventionally grown outside where there is a natural source of light, it is possible to take all your pots inside and provide artificial light source. Being protected inside makes all your plants safe from unfriendly weather as well as insects. With plenty of residential lighting products to choose from, it is actually not that difficult to provide healthy environment for all your plants.

The main purpose of grow lights is to provide artificial light source to replace plants’ necessities for sunlight. By emitting proper electromagnetic spectrum, plants are still capable of performing natural process of photosynthesis even when they are kept inside a closed environment. Grow lights are particularly useful during winter months when the availability of sunlight is limited to few hours only. However, it is also possible to use such application in any other season as supplemental light for faster growth.

Some of the most commonly used electric lights are LED (Light Emitting Diode), HID (High Intensity Discharge), and MH (Metal Halide). In almost all respects, LED is the most preferred type because it does not produce intense heat and it uses less energy at the same time. Also, it does not require ballasts and allows production of long-lasting bright light with the proper wavelength which only corresponds to the absorption peaks of a plant’s photochemical processes.

residential lightingBoth for commercial and non-commercial uses, LED lights have the advantages of energy saving and easy installation yet they deliver sufficient bright light for any room conditions. Manufacturers develop various types of LED lights with certain lumens as measurement to determine how bright the lights are. Light color and lumens are two important things to decide which LED you should use to optimize grow lights efficiency and usefulness for indoor garden.

As general rule, choosing the proper light must be based on the plants’ native environment. For example, desert plants require most intense lighting for approximately 14 hours a day, while tropical plants that naturally grow well even in shades will thrive under only medium to low intensity. Colors temperature, measured in kelvins (K), can be used as indicator as well. Colors under 5000k are considered cool (blue), while those under 3000k are known as warm (red).

Regardless of the types, shapes, or size, LED residential lighting including for indoor garden is more energy efficient compared to other types with the same level of brightness. The fact that LED produces less heat is good to prevent plants from excessive transpiring too.
